The Mayville Cardinals opened their season with a statement win on Thursday night, relying on a punishing ground game to defeat Winnebago Lutheran 34-19. Dominic Schuelke was the undisputed star of the contest, erupting for 295 rushing yards and finding the end zone four times on 33 carries. Quarterback Joe Promersberger also played a vital role, chipping in 80 passing yards and punching in a rushing touchdown to keep the Winnebago defense on their heels all night. Winnebago Lutheran fought hard to stay competitive, led by Eli Muche’s 134 rushing yards and Evan Cole’s dual-threat effort, which accounted for two total scores. Receiver Quinn Gensler provided a bright spot for the visitors, hauling in 58 yards and a touchdown pass from Cole. Despite a stout defensive effort from Josh Pollesch, who recorded an interception and 13 tackles, the Cardinals' offensive line consistently opened holes that the visitors simply could not close. Defensively, Mayville was anchored by Paxton Decker’s impressive 13-tackle performance, which included a tackle for loss and four successful extra points. The victory marks a successful start to the season for the home team as they look to build momentum following this dominant display. Mayville will look to carry this energy into their next matchup after proving their depth and grit on both sides of the ball.
